Seniors League Details

Although the gent’s Seniors league has been going since 1985, Turnhouse has yet to win this “prestigious” trophy. Our best performance was in 2012 when we were just pushed into 2nd place on games difference. If you would like to help the club change their fortunes this year, please read on…

I’m aware we have potentially 254 qualifiers within the club – that is, males, 55 or over, retired or part-retired. Matches are on a Tuesday or Thursday morning and involve a pre-match coffee and lunch afterwards. The encounters are very sociable but be in no doubt they are always competitive. We play in games of six pairs playing best-ball. You would be up against guys with similar handicaps. There are 10 matches, 5 home and 5 away – see 2016 details below – and your availability can be for only one or many.

Please see – www.southedinburghdistrictseniorgolfleague.wordpress.com – or the Seniors Noticeboard for more SEDSGL information … or just contact me, I’m keen to learn of any new interest and to increase our squad.

Historical Background of SEDSGL

The senior gentlemen’s league was founded in 1994. Eddie Dobson and Jim Stewart, two senior members at Glencorse G.C., initially approached a number of other Golf Clubs in the South Edinburgh area in order to gauge interest. Eight Clubs:  Broomieknowe, Craigmillar Park, Lothianburn, Mortonhall, Ravelston, Swanston, Torphin Hill and Turnhouse responded favourably and at a meeting held at Glencorse Golf Club in October, 1994, the South Edinburgh District Seniors Golf League (SEDSGL) was formed. At this meeting the original League Rules were drawn up with the emphasis being that the league would foster Seniors social golf in an amicable but competitive manner in the best golfing traditions. This ethos still holds good to-day and has been adopted in the league slogan.

The league now consists of eleven local clubs:

  • Broomieknowe
  • Craigmillar Park
  • Glencorse
  • Haddington
  • Kingsknowe
  • Merchants of Edinburgh
  • Mortonhall
  • Prestonfield
  • Ravelston
  • Swanston
  • Turnhouse

Turnhouse senior men (55 & over and in p/t work) form a summer team to play in the SEDSGL. The Turnhouse games and teams are currently organised by Dave Simpson (email … simpson.90@hotmail.co.uk)
